English Introduction

Rev. Lee, Ja-Ik was born on a small island of Tapjeong-ree in Kyeongsangnam-do, on July 27, 1879. In his early life, he became an orphan, so he was forced to seek his own means of living. At Gimje, he begun to work as a stablemen for a millionaire named Cho, Duk-Sam. His sincerity made him win great trust from others and naturally succeed in his business ventures.

In 1904, together with Cho, Duk-Sam, he met a missionary named Lewis Boyd Tate (known by his Korean name, Choi, Eui-Duk), who led them into the Christian faith. After conversion into Christianity, they used to meet at Chos house for worship and fellowship. Consequently their meeting developed into Dujong-ree Church (re-named now Kumsan Church). In the same year he married Kim, Sun-Kyeong and Rev. Tate officiated their wedding.

In 1906, he was baptized and at the same time appointed as a director. Two years later, he became the first elder of Dujong-ree Church. Sponsored by elder Cho, he had an opportunity to enter Pyongyang Presbyterian Seminary in 1908. After the graduation of its eighth class, he was ordained as a minister at Jeolla Presbytery and began to work as a co-minister with missionary Tate at Kumsan Church. From 1919 to 1920, he served as moderator of Jeonbuk Presbytery and finally in 1924 he was elected as moderator of the 13th General Assembly for the Presbyterian Church of Korea.

From 1925 to 1936 he was employed as an itinerant preacher by the Australian Presbyterian Mission Committee and took care of some churches under Geochang Missions Station. In 1927, he was honored to be elected as moderator of Gyeongnam Presbytery again. Unfortunately he went through great sorrow caused by the death of his beloved wife in 1929. He married again to Kang, Hak-Min in 1931. From 1927 to 1930 he studied a postgraduate course at Pyongyang Presbyterian Seminary and he served as a member of the board of trustees of the Seminary from 1927 to 1937.

In 1937, he returned to Jeonbuk Presbytery, where he served as the pastor of Kumsan Church and Wonpyeong (Gubong-ree) Church in Gimje to the year 1945.

Between 1947 and 1948, Rev. Lee was re-elected as moderator of the 33rd and 34th General Assembly for two years consecutively. This showed that he had been highly respected by the contemporary church leaders of his time.

He served as a co-minister at Kumsan-eop Church (now re-named Kumsan First Presbyterian Church). In 1947, he moved to Daejeon City to help establish Southern Presbyterian Mission Station and worked on many other projects. In April of 1952, he and missionary Elmer Timothy Boyer (known by his Korean name Bo, Yi-Yeol) established Daejeon Advanced Bible School.

In addition to these activities, he separated Daejeon from the Chungnam Presbytery, making it independent and then became the first moderator. He established Ojung Church and became the first pastor of the church. Finally, on August 25, 1952, he established Daejeon Theological Seminary, from which the history of our school began. He also became the first chancellor of the seminary. He retired to stay with his son at Wonpyeong-ree in Gimje, where he passed away on October 7, 1958 at the age of 79. Two days later, his funeral service was held by the Daejeon Presbytery in Gimje at Wonpyeong-ree.

Rev. Lee was highly respected especially according to these three factors: (1) His unparalleled career (no one has been elected as moderator, three times in Korea) and his nationwide influence (from Seoul to Chungchong, Jeolla, and Kyeongsang province). (2) His various important activities and integrated personality (never pursued wealth, power, or fame, nor deserted his faith to gain his own interests). (3) His determined vocation in establishing about twenty churches and pioneered them, including Kumsan Church and Wonpyeong Church. He also, kept his position from the beginning of his ministry as a minister of small rural churches, in spite of invitation from great urban churches such as Gaebok-dong Church and Guam Church in Gunsan.

Even though the Japanese authorities forced him to change his name according to Japanese style and to worship their idols at shrines, he didnt surrender himself to their requests, but endured their harsh oppression. Soon after independence from Japan, he was offered the chance from Vice-President Ham, Tae-Young to participate in the new cabinet as minister of transportation or minister of communication, but he declined to join. Instead he demonstrated his will to pursue his way as a good shepherd through his life. Since he was good in laws and rules of the church, missionary L.T. Newland (Nam, Dae-Ree) praised him as a wonderful moderator. Current constitutional law in the Presbyterian Church of Korea was re-enacted by Rev. Lee, in 1953.

Rev. Lee is said to be the greatest figure during the 120-year history of the Korean Church. Nobody can compete with him in regards to his achievements and spirit in all of the churches combined. We then should respect his accomplishments with praise as a symbol of leadership for our churches. However, he remained as a rural church pastor through his life in spite of his national fame. Even though, he had difficulty in achieving the glory and fame as a respectful pastor, due to his extreme poverty as an orphan and stableman. He still worked for the Church of God with a pure heart; he was never interested in pride, power, or fame. We may well call him an everlasting big stone face. It is our great honor to have had him as the first chancellor of Daejeon Theological Seminary & College. His life, his dedication and his memory, will always be treasured.
